The Second International Conference of Young Researchers on Advanced Materials is held in Haikou

--Prof. Yi Hongliang of RAL serves as the chairman of Session E1, with 13 doctoral candidates participating in the exchange

The Second International Conference of Young Researchers on Advanced Materials (ICYRAM), sponsored by International Union of Materials Research Societies (IUMRS), was held from October 24 to 29, 2014 in Haikou. ICYRAM is a new series of meetings initiated by IUMRS, with the first ICYRAM (ICYRAM 2012) organized by Materials Research Society in Singapore. The second ICYRAM was held by China Materials Research Society, covering 15 themes in 8 fields. The conference received more than 900 abstracts from over 30 countries and regions, and was participated by more than a thousand experts and scholars from all over the world.

As the chairman of Session E1,which themed “Advanced High Strength Steels: Processing - structure – property”, Prof. Yi HongLiang invited Prof. Yan Hongwei from Hong Kong University, Prof. Huang Mingxin from Taiwan University and Dr. Xiong Xiaochuan from General Motors and Prof. Li Hongxiang from Beijing University of Science and Technology as co-chairman. He also invited altogether 14 guest speakers  to give a special report, including Sybrand Van der Zwaag, Dutch academician from Delft University of Technology, Prof. Tadashi Furuhara from Japan's Northeast University, Prof. Nobuhiro Tsuji from Kyoto University, Prof. Peter Hodgson from Australia's Deakin University and Prof. Christopher Hutchinson from Monash University, as well as other famous scholars in steel research from the University of Hong Kong, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Tsinghua University, Northeastern University and Dalian University of Technology. Thirteen doctoral students from RAL took part in the academic exchange of the session.

During the meeting, the scholars had an in-depth discussion on development research and structural performance control in application process of the stability of austenite in high strength steel, High Manganese Steel’s Grain Refinement, transformation and improvement of its toughnees,  performance optimization of TRIP/TWIP steel, the influence of alloy elements on the steel structure and mechanical properties, and ultrafine grain high strength steel. The representatives actively exchanged ideas during the meeting.

This conference offered a great opportunity for young scholars to communicate face to face with international masters. It also provided a platform for the graduate students from international and domestic first-class universities who participated in this conference to communicate with and get to know each other. Besides, this conference also provided a benchmark for graduate students of RAL to keep up with those from the world first-class universities.
