Professor Yong Qilong Visits RAL for Academic Exchange

On September 8, at the invitation of Academician Wang Guodong in the State Key Laboratory of Rolling and Automation, Professor Yong Qilong from Central Iron & Steel Research Institute visited RAL for academic exchange, and delivered a lucid lecture on how to extract basic theories in research work at the seminar hosted by Professor Liu Zhenyu. The teachers and postgraduates in RAF attended the seminar.

At the beginning of the seminar, Professor Yong gave a simple but profound exposition on applied basic research from the perspectives of purpose, stage and mode of research. He shared his experience with the teachers and students on how to boil down basic theories from experimental facts in a scientific way. Professor Yong pointed out that iron and steel industry was currently a buyer's market. Therefore, as researchers in iron and steel industry, we should keep up-to-date with market demand and be market-oriented while doing scientific research, applying scientific projects, and carrying out our research work.

In his report titled "The Role of Niobium in High Carbon Steel", Professor Yong elaborated the action mechanism and related application practice of niobium in iron and steel, based on the study of niobium in high carbon steel. He also introduced the mechanism and application of niobium, including niobium’s role in the segregation of crystal defects, niobium’s role in improving the hardenability of steel, niobium’s role in  increasing the amount of eutectoid carbon, niobium’s role in refining pearlite colony, and so on.  In addition, Professor Yong put forward some original ideas on the role of niobium in steel and its mechanism research.

In the afternoon, the teachers and postgraduates in RAF had a further discussion and communication with Professor Yong Qilong, who gave detailed answers and suggestions to the problems faced by the teachers and students in their research work.
