The Opening Ceremonoy of the Sixth Academic Committee of the State Key Laboratory of Rolling and Automation (RAL) i.e. the first session of the Sixth Academic Committee was successfully held in NEU International Hotel. The participants of the meeting included Gan Yong, Chairman of the Academic Committee and Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Li Zhinong, Division Level Researcher of Materials Division of Department of High-tech Development and Industrialization in Ministry of Science and Technology, Yang Xiaoqiu, Director of Administrative Center for Basic Research in Ministry of Science and Technology, Jiang Shangqing, Deputy Director of Environmental Protection and Energy Saving Committee of China Iron and Steel Association (CISA), Sun Jiaxue, Secretary of Party Committee of Northeastern University, Wang Jinkuan, Vice President of Northeastern University. The meeting was hosted by Wang Guoren, Director of Sci-tech Department of Northeastern University.

First, Vice President Wang Jinkuan announced the appointment of the Sixth Academic Committee of RAL. Secretary of Party Committee Sun Jiaxue presented letters of appointment to each member of the Academic Committee and delivered a speech. Sun Jiaxue said, “Today is a very important day for Northeastern University and RAL. On behalf of Northeastern University, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the committee members for your acceptance of the invitation. Under the leadership of the leader group of RAL, RAL has made great achievements. Especially the establishment of the Collaborative Innovation Center of Steel Generic Technology, set up by RAL in cooperation with University of Science and Technology Beijing, highlighted the importance of the laboratory. In recent years, RAL has also made great progress in the exploration of non-ferrous metals. In 2015, facing the downward overall economic situation in China, the total research funds of RAL still reached RMB240 million, which is really not an easy task. I hope RAL could keep moving forward and make greater progress under the guidance of all the committee members.

Academic Committee Director of RAL and Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering Gan Yong, on behalf of all the members of the Sixth Academic Committee, expressed his gratitude for the trust of Northeastern University and the laboratory, and promissed to assume the responsibility of academic committee members. Academician Gan Yong pointed out that the State Key Laboratory of Rolling and Automation has always enjoyed high reputation in the industry, amd has made many amazing achievements. He hoped that, under the leadership of the leader group of RAL, all the staff members of RAL could continue to explore and innovate to make greater contribution.

Li Zhinong, Researcher of Ministry of Science and Technology, and Jiang Shangqing, Deputy Director of Environmental Protection and Energy Saving Committee of CISA, also delivered a speech on the reform of national science and technology system and the situation of steel industry, respectively, and they hoped that RAL could further adjust its research direction based on present situation and development trend of the industry, and fully make use of its advantages to play a more important role in the “13th Five Year Plan” and make a positive contribution to the development of science and technology and the cultivation of talents in China.

Subsequently, Academic Committee Director and Academician Gan Yong hosted the first session of the Sixth Academic Committee. During the meeting, committee members listened to 2015 Work Report of RAL made by Professor and Director of RAL Wang Zhaodong. In his report, Director Wang made a detailed introduction about the achievements of RAL in 2015 in terms of scientific research, team construction, talent cultivation, exchange with foreign countries, and laboratory construction. He also analyzed the shortcomings of RAL and future development plan.

After listening to the report, the participating committee members highly praised the achievements of RAL in last year, and held that RAL has played its due role in leading the progress of China’s steel rolling industry. Committee Members also held a careful analysis and discussion on the adjustment of RAL’s research direction, scientific positioning, further broadening of research field, participation in the main battlefield of economic construction, and promotion of talent cultivation and academic exchange in face of new situation.
