J David Embury of McMaster University Visited RAL

At the invitation Prof. Wang Zhaodong, Director of RAL, and Dr. Ye Qibin, Prof. J David Embury from McMaster University in Canada visited RAL during April 17-19. On April 17th, Prof. J David Embury delivered an academic lecture titled “Attempts to Increase Strength and Toughness using Architectured Materials” for teachers and students of RAL.

Prof. Embury elaborated on the basic concept of architectured materials based on the elasto-plastic transition and Bauschinger effect of materials, and how to achieve significant improvement in mechanical properties such as strength and toughness through composition, phase, and structural change design at different scales.

Professor Embury gave several exciting research examples based on his long term research experience, including the classical pearlite co-deformation mechanism, the recent structural gradient of Cu-Nb nanocomposite wire and the new of partial shearing belt phenomenon in the composition gradient 300M martensitic steel.

Finally, Prof. Embury answered the questions of the students and encouraged the students to question others’ opinions and develop their own.
