On July 17th, at the invitation of Prof. Zhang Dianhua, deputy director of RAL, Dr. Youssef Benhafsi, an internationally renowned vibration expert in metallurgy industry from UNIVIB in the United Kingdom, visited RAL and gave a lecture in Academic Report Room 411 at the academic meeting hosted by Professor Zhang Dianhua.

Mill vibration is an important factor constraining the economic benefits of the metallurgy industry. Dr. Youssef Benhafsi focused on the rolling mill vibration that often occurred during the rolling of thin and hard steel strips, and elaborated the hazards of mill vibration, main classification of mill vibration and reasons for the vibration by referring to his own engineering experience in the field of metallurgy industry. Meanwhile, he demonstrated an intelligent vibration monitoring and forecasting software directing at the vibration in rolling mills and grinding machines.

Dr. Youssef conducted a modal analysis on the vibration of the four-high mill and confirmed the typical vibration forms of the third and fifth frequency multiplication. A bearing seat damping device was designed to effectively suppress the vibration. Dr. Youssef pointed out that about 50% of rolling mill vibration problems were caused by the rollers. In view of the vibration caused by roll grinding, Dr. Youssef designed and developed AVAS, an intelligent system to detect roller mill vibration. It can be used to carry out intelligent monitoring and management on the status and quality of coil, ensuring the quality of the coil and the stability of the rolling process. At the same time, it guarantees the grinding quality of the roller and eliminates mill vibration caused by the roller.
