On the morning of January 14th, the Collaborative Innovation Center of Steel Technology in Northeastern University held “2017 Evaluation and Commendation Ceremony” in Cai Guanshen Lecture Room of the Hanqing Hall. Vice President Tang Lixin, Chinese Academy of Engineering academician Wang Guodong, President Assistant and Director of Development Planning and Disciplinary Construction Department Liu Changsheng, and relevant department heads in NEU attended the ceremony and presented awards to the winners.

Academician Wang Guodong, director of the center, delivered the 2017 summary report and demonstrated the prospect for the work in 2018. Wang Guodong gave a brief introduction to the center’s assessment criteria "work, performance, and effectiveness", and the breakthroughs made in the ten key generic technologies. According to Wang Guodong, some of the center's advanced technologies, equipments and products had been exported to the foreign countries across the world , and had begun to take the lead in the past year. This contributed to the transformation and development of the steel industry, and achieved collaboration and innovation across the whole industry chain. In 2017, the number of "13th Five-Year Plan" project approved to the centre reached a record high, some military-civilian integration projects made major breakthroughs, and some new organization models of scientific research has entered the battlefield of national economy, such as quasi-industrialization platforms, quasi-industrialization bases for steel and metallurgy, R&D centre of liquid metal and additive manufacturing. These explorations had played an active role in driving the innovation resources of universities to serve the economic and social development. Wang Guodong hoped that the center would continue to target at the cutting-edge technology in the world and the urgent needs of China, make great effort to generate key scientific projects, strengthen basic research, and make new explorations in uncovered areas, so as to make major breakthroughs in original innovation; It is necessary to integrate science and education, educate people about scientific research, and organize large platforms and large teams to tackle major projects. We should continue to explore the development path of education informatization with Chinese characteristics, strengthen the construction of big data management and control platform, and realize the integrated management and control of “research—teaching—management”.

Vice President Tang Lixin delivered a speech at the ceremony. Tang said that the achievements made by the center were very encouraging. Firstly, the focus on cross-discipline integration had ensured the technical leadership of the metallurgical industry in the entire chain of the processes, and had achieved systematic results of research innovation on products, processes and equipments. Secondly, the deep integration of basic theory, science and technology, and engineering practice, and the deep integration of teaching, scientific research, and transformation had formed the research path, research model, and research concept that is unique in Northeastern University, in China, and in the whole world. The report of the 19th CPC National Congress highlighted the key generic technologies, cutting-edge technologies, modern engineering technologies, and subversive technological innovations. The center guided its research work in accordance with such development concepts and not only achieved educating people by teaching, but also achieved educating people by science and technology. The excellent results achieved by the center in 2017 in national key R&D projects and major projects of the Natural Science Foundation of China were based on the work of building key technologies in companies, writing papers in workshops, and engraving patents on the production line. Tang Lixin hoped that the center would continue to promote the spirit of uniting knowledge with action and serving the country with science and technology, make innovations in the management mode of scientific research organizations, build a scientific research team that is cohesive and competitive, serve the country’s major strategies, and make new contributions to the construction of “Double first-class” university, and to the science and technology progress in China.
Prof. Wu Di, deputy director of the Collaborative Innovation Center of Steel Technology of Northeastern University, read out the “Decisions on commendations of 2017 Freshmen Enrolment Award, Outstanding Postgraduates, Outstanding Youth Talents, Outstanding Innovation Models, Outstanding Chief Experts, and Outstanding Research Directions.” In accordance with the center's annual work plan and based on the annual performance appraisal, the center gave commendations to 10 postgraduates such as Lan Mengfei, 20 doctorate candidates such as Li Wei, 9 youth talents such as Zhang Yuanxiang, 11 innovation pacesetters such as Prof. Yi Hongliang, outstanding chief experts Prof.Wang Zhaodong and Prof. Han Yuexin, outstanding research direction “advanced conventional process hot rolling process and equipment technology”. At the same time, the centre presented 2017 Steel Scholarship Freshmen Enrollment Award to 44 doctorate candidates such as Zhang Jiayun.

Li Wei, the outstanding student representative, delivered an acceptance speech in which he expressed sincere gratitude for the teachers, and introduced his own learning methods and research understandings.

Wang Chao, the youth talent representative, summed up the research practice in his own career about exploring smelting and deoxidizing laws beside the induction furnace and participating in the development of high-energy welding steel, and introduced his working experience after graduation in participating in the Marine Engineering Steel Project. He called upon all the teachers and students to explore boldly in uncovered research areas and unknown fields, to go deep into the front line of research and production, and to write research papers on the land of our motherland.

Yi Hongliang, the innovation pacesetter representative, introduced his research experience in the acceptance speech. By taking comprehensive consideration of the demand in the entire industrial chain, his research team successfully developed the 2Gpa hot stamping steel through independent innovation, whose performance was significantly better than the international counterparts, and they had applied the steel into the welding structural components of mass-produced cars for the first time across the world. Yi Hongliang stated that his research team would work hard to change the steel pattern for automobiles, and mark the brand of Northeastern University and RAL in cars across the globe.

It was reported that from January 6th to January 10th, the centre conducted annual self-evaluation work in various directions. By summary and self-evaluation, the annual planning in all directions had been fully implemented and significant progress had been made. Finally they selected a total of 127 candidates through self-evaluation and summary, including 51 outstanding postgraduates, 45 outstanding doctorate candidates, 11 youth talents, and 19 innovation pacesetters. From January 11st to 12nd, the centre organized chief experts and staff from every direction to carry out the multi-candidate evaluation and voting. 2017 direction chief work report assessment meeting was held on the morning of January 13th. On the meeting, Prof. Zhu Miaoyong, chief expert of the direction “advanced smelting and continuous casting technology and equipment technology”, Professor Wang Zhaodong, chief expert of the direction “conventional process hot rolling process and equipment technology”, Prof. Liu Zhenyu, chief expert of the direction “advanced short-flow process technology and equipment”, Professor Han Yuexin, chief expert of the direction “ green development and utilization of iron ore resources, Prof. Li Jianping, chief expert of the direction “advanced cold rolling, heat treatment and plating process and equipment technology”, and Professor Li Hongru, chief expert of the direction “Informational and Intelligent Technology, reported to leaders of the center and the university on the progress of each direction in 2017 and the progress in their employment period.
