Director of RAL: Prof. Yuan Guo



Yuan Guo, born in Tai'an, Shandong Province in January 1979, is a member of the Communist Party of China, a doctor of engineering, a professor and doctoral supervisor of Northeastern University, a young scholar of the Cheung Kong Scholars Award Program of the Ministry of Education, a member of the 8th Advanced Manufacturing Department of the Ministry of Education, and a recipient of the special government allowance of the State Council. He has been engaged in the research of key technologies and equipment technologies for high-quality steel rolled steels for a long time. In recent years, as the project leader, he has acquired more than 30 projects, including national Twelfth Five Year science and technology support plans, key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and major scientific research and development projects from the industry. He has won 2 second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award (as the second and third author respectively), 8 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, more than 40 authorized invention patents, and published more than 30 papers included in SCI as the first author/corresponding author; In 2016, he won the 7th China Metallurgical Youth Science and Technology Award, and was selected into the tenth batch of Hundred Thousand Talents Project of Liaoning Province in the same year. In 2017, he won the 11th Liaoning Youth Science and Technology Award (Top Ten Talents). In 2018, he was selected as one of the top young talents in the Liaoning Revitalization Talents Program of Liaoning Province.

  

Main scientific research work and research fields:

As one of the main authors, Prof. Yuan has participated in the development of technology and equipment for the first set of plate and strip roll-quenching process with independent intellectual property rights in China, and ultra-fast cooling of medium and thick plates. In recent years, he has mainly presided over the basic research and development of key technologies in the fields of the new generation of controlled rolling and controlled cooling process for hot tandem rolled steel strip, the industrialization technology of controlled cooling for hot rolled seamless steel tubes and the control of deformation/ phase transformation integrated structure and performance, direct strip casting of special steel/ special alloy thin strip, and the industrialization technology and equipment for endless rolling.

  

Academic innovation and contribution:

Prof. Yuan has proposed a high intensity homogenization cooling heat exchange mechanism for hot rolled steel, which fundamentally solved the problem of controllability of micro heat transfer stability. In the field of continuous roll quenching technology for high-quality medium and thick steel plates, Prof. Yuan’s studies have clarified the mechanism of jet impingement heat transfer in continuous roll quenching process for high-strength plate and strip, and a high-precision control method for plate shape during high-intensity cooling has been developed, which has been applied to the development of the first complete set of plate and strip roll quenching machine with independent intellectual property rights in China, and this has solved the problem of flatness control for roll quenched steel plates. In the field of new-generation controlled rolling and cooling technology for hot rolled plate and strip, based on the industrial demand of green and high-quality transformation and development of steel products, focusing on the new-generation controlled cooling technology for hot rolled plate and strip, Prof. Yuan has established a core technology system including ultra-fast cooling mechanism and cooling jet structure. He has also developed the first set of new-generation controlled cooling technology and equipment for large-scale hot rolling lines in China, and has developed a series of high-quality and reduced hot rolled strip products. The research results form an application demonstration and become a new-generation of mainstream controlled cooling technology for large hot strip mills in China. Aiming at the special heat transfer mechanism and online cooling control technology under the annular section of hot rolled seamless steel pipes that have not been broken through for a long time, Prof. Yuan has proposed the heat transfer mechanism and control method of pipe asymmetric jet impingement cooling, and thus the problems of high intensity uniform cooling mechanism, key equipment technology, and precise process control of pipes have been successively broken through.

Prof. Yuan has presided over the research and development of the first set of online controlled cooling technology and industrial equipment for hot rolled seamless steel tubes in China, and this has opened up a new field of online control of microstructure and properties for the integration of deformation and phase transformation of hot rolled seamless steel tubes. The above achievements have made great contributions to promoting the performance improvement of high-quality steel materials and the innovative development of the steel industry in China.
