Wang Guodong

Wang Guodong, an academician in Chinese Academy of Engineering



Wang Guodong, an academician in Chinese Academy of Engineering, was born in Dalian, Liaoning Province in 1942. Wang is currently a professor, doctoral supervisor, and internationally renowned expert in rolling technical field. He graduated from Northeastern Institute of Technology in September 1966, and worked in rolling technology and management of bar and cycle section in the Small Rolling Mill of  Ansteel from October 1968 to October 1978.  From October 1978 to September 1981, he went to  Beijing Iron and Steel Research General Institute for further study, and was awarded the master’s degree.  Upon graduation, he served as a teacher in Northeastern University and was given fast-track promotion to associate professor in 1987. In May, 1989, he was again given fast-track promotion to professor. In January, 1993, he went to University of Pittsburgh as a senior visiting scholar.


Academician Wang has participated in application and project feasibility studies of Northeastern University’s State Key Laboratory of Rolling and Automation since 1989. He presided over the construction and scientific research as a deputy director of the State Key Laboratory (in the construction phase) in 1991. From 1996 to 2004, he worked as the director of Northeastern University’s State Key Laboratory of Rolling and Automation. Academician Wang is currently the executive director of Chinese Society for Metals, honorary member of Chinese Materials Research Society, and the vice chairman of Rolling Institute of Chinese Society for Metals. He also serves as the director in rolling theory academic committee of Rolling Institute of Chinese Society for Metals, executive deputy director of Northeastern University’s State KeyLaboratory of Rolling and Automation, member of Metal Institute of Liaoning Province, director of Rolling editorial board, and editorial member or counselor of a number of journals, including Steel Research InternationalJournal of Iron and Steel ResearchJournal of Northeastern UniversityMetallurgical AutomationJournal of Plasticity EngineeringWide and Heavy Plate.


Academician Wang has long been engaged in the study of application basis and engineering technology in steel material rolling theory, techniques, and automation, etc. He has presided over and completed a number of National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program), National High Technology Research and Development Programs (863 Program), key research projects, key projects of Natural Science Foundation of China, and so forth, achieving many innovative results.


1) Academician Wang has undertaken the subject of “Fundamental research of grain refinement in rolling process of a new generation iron and steel material” in the 973 project “Major basic study of a new generation iron and steel material”. , He put forward some important academic thoughts, such asproper refinement of grains and complex strengthening, and solved the key problems of improving material tensile strength, reducing yield ratio, and producing super steel on the existing rolling mill. He has completed systematic study in a number of fields, including manufacturing process formulation of plates, bar and rod, original steel development, hot rolled super steel rolling and industrial application of products. His research findings have been applied to enterprises like Bao Steel, Ansteel, and Bensteel, and has mass-produced megatons of super-steel. The findings have also been used in automotive and engineering industries. For instance, the application of super-steel in the production of chassis bearing beams and other components in FAW (First Automobile Works )has been written into enterprise standards. The academic achivements have generated enormous economic and social benefits , making great contribution to China’s leading position in the world in terms of the development, production and application of super-steel. our country to lead the world in our country’s super-steel. Wang is honored as “Father of super-steel” by foreign media.


2)Academician Wang has taken charge of thick and medium plate mill core rolling technology research during undertaking national major technical equipment development project of “Shougang 3500mm thick and medium plate mill core rolling technology and key equipment research”. The project focuses on developing thick and medium plate mill core rolling technology with our own intellectual property rights, so as to achieve localization. A complete set of thick and medium plate key rolling technology with our own intellectual property rights has been developed during the process, breaking a new path in the localization of thick and medium plate mill. The research findings have been applied in Ansteel more than 20 factories at home and abroad, including Tanggang and Ansteel in China, and some steel plants in Vietnam. 


3) Academician Wang has undertaken the subjects of “Simulation and optimization of hot rolling technology”, “Application of artificial intelligence in rolling” and other subjects of National 9.5 Key Project, targeting at optimizing rolling process by means of software, applying technologies of artificial intelligence, finite element, structure and property prediction based on the mass information in rolling processwith few hardware changes. Bao SteelNow the research findings have been applied in Bao Steel, where the hot strip mill plate-shaped closure rate has declined  from 1.62% to 0.5%;the wasteresulting from of the out-of-tolerance thickness in 2030 cold rolling mill has reduced by 50%;the 2050 hot rolling mill volume scrap rate has declined from 2.91% to 0.44%. The technology has been applied to production lines in Fugangand Bensteel, establishing an intelligent optimization system, and improving the  precision of products in size.


4)Academician Wang has deduced the influence function of roll system deformation, and proposed matrix solution of roll elastic deformations, laying a solid foundation for the further development of shape control theory. He has also deduced variable cross-section rolling tension differential equations, and his papers have played an importantrole in unifying opinion, and finishing discussion on rolling tension differential equation in 1980s in China. Wang has participated in the study of finite element and theory, proposed the new method of simplifying nonlinear equations to linear one by FEM calculation, and established the new approach to deal with the first class of singular point by adding ultrathin unit in the deformation area entrance. He has also proposed the new concept and handling method of pseudo shape function, and set up multiple coupling numerical rolling mill simulation system.


Academician Wang was awarded 2 first prizes and 4 second prizes of National Progress Awards in S&T, 1 second prize of State Technological InventionAward, 14 first andsecond prizes of provincial scientific and technology award, 10 first and second prizes of metallurgy technology award. Besides, he has 9 authorized invention patents, 5 authorized utility models, 6 monographs, and 4 translations. Academician Wang has published more than 80 papers catalogued by SCI, and over 150 by EI. Under his tutorship, , 86 graduates have received doctoral degree and 69 have received master’s degree.


Academician Wang has gained the following awards and titles: Liaoning Province Merit Award of Science and Technology, Baosteel Education Award, Liaoning Province Principal Model Worker, Outstanding Teacher in Liaoning Province, Shenyang Model Worker, Shenyang Revitalization Award, 2006 Liaoning Education Pioneer , etc
