The national standard for "Manganese steel plate for marine platform structure" has been approved by the National Steel Standardization Technical Committee.

The National Standard for Medium Manganese Steel Plates for Marine Platform Structure, prepared by Northeastern University, was approved by the National Steel Standardization Technical Committee at the “Standard Meeting Week” held in Yinchuan from August 5th to 9th, 2019. The expert group agreed that the national standard has reached the international advanced level.

Based on the research results of Research and production technology development of high-manganese high-strength and medium-thickness plates for offshore platforms and titanium steel composite plates, a major project in the national 863 Program, The national standard for Chinese Manganese Steel Plates for Marine Platform Structures is compiled through comprehensive summarization and drafting after analyzing the status quo and development trend of steel products and technologies for offshore platform structures at home and abroad, soliciting opinions from relevant enterprises, research institutes and users in the industry and combining them with practical application experience. The National Standards Compiling Group for Medium Manganese Steel Plates for Marine Platform Structure began to prepare the project application form for this standard in March 2017 and submitted it to the National Steel Standard Technical Committee. In June, the standard framework was initially established and the standard was drafted, and completed in October of the same year. The draft standard was published on the National Standard Information Public Service Platform. In January 2018, the project was approved by the National Steel Standards Committee in the document “The Fourth Batch of National Standards Revision Plan 2017”, with the project number 20173724-T-605. Later, under the organization of the Metallurgical Industry Information Standards Institute, the standard compiling group widely consulted and revised the draft standard to form a standard discussion draft. The final draft of the standard was finally formed after a thorough discussion among the meeting experts.

The national standard for medium manganese steel plate for offshore platform structure is applicable to medium manganese steel plate with thickness of 20mm~150mm for offshore platform structure. The standard stipulates three grades of Q550ZM, Q620ZM and Q690ZM. The chemical composition breaks through the content limitation of the high-Ni and other precious metals in the traditional offshore platform structure. The technical idea of “Mn” is adopted to replace that of “Ni”, and the Mn content ranges from 3.5% to 6.5%, with the maximum Ni content less than 0.60%, which greatly reduces the cost of the alloy. At the same time, the production process is short and the process is simple. It belongs to the first technology with independent intellectual property rights. After the promulgation and implementation of this standard, it will be beneficial to the promotion and application of high-strength and tough manganese steel platform steel, promote technological innovation in the steel and offshore industries, and enhance products’ competitiveness in domestic and international market.

This Standard Meeting Week was held by the Metallurgical Industry Information Standards Institute. In addition to the national standard of National Manganese Steel Plate for Marine Platform Structure, other 50 national and industry standards including Large-line energy welding steel were also approved during the meeting.
