“Study on Surface Oxidation Mechanism of Hot Rolled Strip and Development and Application of New Generation Control Technology” won the first prize in 2019 Metallurgical Science and Technology Award.

Recently, the China Iron and Steel Association and the China Institute of Metals announced the award-winning project of the 2019 Metallurgical Science and Technology Award, and the project of “Research on the Surface Oxidation Mechanism of Hot Rolled Strip and the Development and Application of New Generation Control Technology” by Northeastern University was awarded the first prize in 2019 Metallurgical Science and Technology Award co-funded by China Iron and Steel Association and China Institute of Metals.


The research team led by Prof. Liu Zhenyu of RAL in Northeastern University began to carry out theoretical research and technology research and development in this direction since 2005. After more than ten years of accumulation and precipitation, the team has systematically explored the selective oxidation mechanism of alloy elements, the precise calculation model of oxidation behavior, the hot deformation behavior of iron oxide scale and the precise control of the structure transformation of iron oxide scale, clarified the high-temperature oxidation mechanism of multi-factor coupling of hot rolling process, and developed a new generation of hot rolling steel oxidation control technology, such as the high adhesion control of oxide scale, precise prediction and control of oxidation behavior, flatness control of oxide scale interface, and high temperature ductile-brittle transition control of oxidation scale.


They have published more than 50 papers of relevant research in academic journals at home and abroad, obtained more than 20 invention patents and software copyrights, forming a complete set of technology for hot rolling oxidation behavior control of steel with independent intellectual property rights. Up to now, the related technology has been successfully applied to nearly 40 production lines of more than 20 large steel companies in China, and has been successfully exported to two major steel giants in Korea, POSCO and HYUNDAI. The varieties of steel involved include C-Mn steel, low carbon steel and microalloy steel, high-strength mechanical engineering steel, high-strength automotive steel and hot-rolled pickling plate series. The high surface quality steel plate produced provides raw material guarantee for downstream users to achieve clean production, and promotes the overall quality improvement of China's steel products.


It is reported that the 2019 Metallurgical Science and Technology Award has awarded 84 awards, including 1 special prize, 14 first prizes, 24 second prizes and 45 third prizes. Northeastern University won two first prizes, namely Study on Surface Oxidation Mechanism of Hot Rolled Strip and Development and Application of New Generation Control Technology led by Prof. Liu Zhenyu and “Research and Development and Application of New No Defects Continuous Casting Technology for Micro-alloy Slab Surface” led by Prof. Zhu Miaoyong.
